When selecting window coverings for your home or business, prioritizing quality and safety is essential. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) establishes regulations to ensure that window treatments meet stringent safety and performance criteria. For residents and businesses in St. Petersburg, Florida, choosing ANSI-compliant window coverings is crucial for safeguarding occupants while enhancing aesthetics and energy efficiency.
In this article, we’ll explore the significance of ANSI standards for window treatments, guide you in selecting high-quality window coverings, and emphasize the importance of safety.

What Are ANSI Standards?
ANSI oversees industry-wide safety guidelines, including those for window treatments. A pivotal standard is the ANSI/WCMA A100.1, which addresses the safety of window blinds, shades, and curtains, with a particular focus on child and pet safety.
The latest revision, ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022, eliminates the use of free-hanging operating cords and tilt cords on all custom window covering products, further enhancing safety measures.
Why Do ANSI Standards Matter?
Non-compliant window coverings can pose significant strangulation hazards due to accessible cords. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), on average, about nine children under five years of age die annually from strangling in window blinds, shades, draperies, and other window coverings with cords.
ANSI-approved window treatments adhere to specific design requirements to mitigate these risks, including:
- Cordless operation or inaccessible cord systems
- Tension devices to prevent cord loops
- Durability standards for long-lasting use
- Material safety to ensure products are non-toxic and fire-resistant
Types of Quality Window Coverings That Meet ANSI Standards
To comply with ANSI/WCMA safety guidelines, manufacturers offer a variety of safe and stylish options. Here are some of the most reliable and compliant window covering choices:
Cordless Blinds
Cordless blinds eliminate the risk of strangulation while offering a sleek, modern look. Popular choices include:
- Cordless faux wood blinds: Durable and moisture-resistant, ideal for humid climates like St. Petersburg, FL.
- Cordless cellular shades: Known for their energy efficiency and insulation properties.
- Cordless aluminum mini blinds: Lightweight and cost-effective for homeowners and businesses.
Motorized Window Shades
Motorized shades are a premium option that meets ANSI compliance while adding convenience. With smart home automation, users can control shades via:
- Remote controls
- Smartphone apps
- Voice assistants (Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, etc.)
This option is perfect for hard-to-reach windows or for enhancing security when away from home.
Roller and Solar Shades
For those looking to improve UV protection and energy efficiency, roller shades and solar shades are excellent ANSI-compliant choices. These shades:
- Reduce glare and protect interior furnishings from sun damage
- Are available in various opacities, from light filtering to blackout
- Offer cord-free designs for enhanced safety
Plantation Shutters
Custom plantation shutters are a timeless window treatment that naturally complies with ANSI safety standards due to their fixed louvers. Benefits include:
- Durability: Made from real wood or composite materials
- Energy efficiency: Acts as a natural insulator against heat and humidity
- Enhanced property value: A premium option that adds curb appeal
Draperies with Wand Control
Custom draperies with wand controls offer a stylish, ANSI-compliant alternative to traditional curtains with long pull cords. These options:
