Window Shades or Window Blinds
Selecting the best type of window treatment for a given room can be difficult, especially with so many options to choose from. Ultimately, with most windows, you will want some form of light control as well as a more decorative touch.
Both blinds and shades offer the light control you need. However, shades are also a soft window treatment and give you more freedom in terms of design, textures, color, and pattern. Blinds, on the other hand, are all about controlling light, airflow, and privacy. Made from slats that hang either vertically or horizontally, you can lift them up and down, or side to side, as well as control the tilt of the slats themselves.
Types of Custom Shades
Horizontal Shades
These shades move up and down your window, with the main section running horizontally between the two sides of your frame. Typically, they are placed on tall, narrow windows.
Vertical Shades
These shades move from side to side on your window. These work well on wide windows and glass doors.
Roman Shades
Roman shades are notable because they stack up evenly when opened. When closed, they are visibly smooth, without the ribbed appearance of traditional shades.
Honeycomb Shades
Honeycomb shades, also called cellular shades, feature crisp pleats. The fabric is bonded together to create honeycomb-shaped cells. We can customize the pleat size and light control options.
Roller Shades
Roller shades are those that roll up when you tug on them. They can be made from a wide range of textiles and are typically used to control the amount of light entering a room.
Solar Shades
Solar shades are similar to roller shades in that they roll open when tugged. However, they are made from a screen-like mesh that blocks UV rays while still letting you enjoy your view.
Blackout Shades
Blackout shades are designed to better control light entering the room. As such, they are idea for bedrooms or anywhere you need to minimize light, such as a home theater.
Sheer Shades
With sheer shades, the goal is to let light in while adding a bit of privacy and atmosphere to the space. These shades are best in public spaces of the home, such as the living room or dining room.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best shades for blocking heat on a lanai?
Solar shades are fantastic for lanais and patios. They block the heat and UV rays but still let you see the view. We often install exterior roller shades that you can lower when the sun sets on the back of the house to keep your space cool.
How do I clean my fabric shades?
For most roller and solar shades, a light dusting or vacuuming with a brush attachment is all you need. If you get a spot on them, you can usually spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid taking them down to soak them, as this can damage the mechanism.
Do you have shades that let light in but keep people from seeing in?
Yes, light-filtering shades and sheer shades are perfect for this. During the day, they let in a soft glow so you don’t need lamps, but they block the view from the outside. Keep in mind that at night, if your lights are on inside, shadows might still be visible.
What is the difference between a roller shade and a Roman shade?
A roller shade rolls up neatly into a tube at the top of the window, offering a very clean, modern look. A Roman shade folds up into stacked pleats when raised, which adds a bit more texture and a “drapery” feel to the room.
Can you install shades on very tall or high windows?
Absolutely. We often do installations for condos or homes with high ceilings. For these windows, we highly recommend motorization so you don’t have to deal with long, unsightly cords or poles to operate them.
Are dual roller shades worth it?
Dual roller shades give you the best of both worlds. You get one solar screen for daytime view and heat control, and a separate blackout shade on the same bracket for total privacy and darkness at night. It is a very versatile setup for bedrooms.

Ron with Sapphire Shades & Shutters was great. We built a new house in Florida and wanted motorized insect screens on the back balcony. Ron came out and measured while the house was still under construction and showed us sample screens, frames, etc. We opted for insect only screens with black tracks to match the house. He also made suggestions on how to hide the motor and cassette that holds the screens at the top. We contracted with him, but had to wait until the stucco was on the house for him to do final measurements. No problem for Ron. I called him back once the stucco was on and within a couple of days one of his guys came out to do the final measure and they placed the order. I think it was 2-3 weeks to get the screens produced and then they came and installed them. The installer was obviously very knowledgeable and friendly. After install he showed us how to use the remote and how to adjust the screen positioning (if that ever became necessary). I would totally use Ron and Sapphire Shades again in the future! 5 Stars!Posted on Google![]()

Working with Ron was easy and effortless. He is very knowledgeable and has every possible fabric style you could imagine. His installer. “Eric” was terrific and got our shades up in no time. So very happy with the outcome and they were very price competitive compared to some big named companies. I’d highly suggest them for your shade needs.Posted on Google![]()
